Want to be happy? Be selfish!

Everyone wants to be happy. In the Pacific Northwest with our lovely, drizzly weather, sometimes we might need of few extra tips to connect to our sunnier side.

Richard Davidson, PhD, director of the Laboratory for Affective Neuroscience at the University of Wisconsin thinks of happiness not a trait but as a skill, like tennis (interview in O Magazine) and says “If you want to be a good tennis player, you can’t just pick up a racket—you have to practice.”

My 3 simple steps to practice being happier and more luminous.

  • Be selfish (not self-centered) – Think of yourself and your well-being, while not harming anyone. Take care of you! When you are selfish in this way, it fills you up and indirectly benefits others. Shift your mind into the belief that it is important (and will benefit you and others) to be selfish. This is the opposite of what most women naturally do. Most of us do not want to be thought of as selfish people. Instead of selfish, I call this mindset being self-full.

When you take care of yourself (and specifically do the next two steps below) you will be more relaxed, calm and centered. Then you can be a better friend, better wife, a better partner, parent, employee/employer, etc. You will have more energy and love to give to others.

  • Take self-time – Set aside a few minutes each day (or to begin with each week) for yourself. We always hear about the importance of quality time with those close to us: quality time with your kids, quality time with your partner, etc. What about quality time with yourself? How often to you invest time and energy in doing something just for you?
  • Do what makes you luminous – This is the key step that will ensure happiness –  how you spend your self-time. During your self-time … do something just for you that fills you up (on all levels, body, mind, emotions, and spirit). Not something productive or has a goal. Something that has no goal other than to make you feel good (with no negative repercussions). Perhaps a walk in nature, a long soak in the tub, reading your favorite book, listening to your favorite music, looking at something beautiful, curling up with a soft blanket and cup of tea. Instead of coming home from a busy day and watching TV perhaps you take a few minutes to do something that makes you feel luminous.

My challenge to you is ….

Dare to be self-full, do something just for you that makes you luminous.
